Alliance of Women’s and Feminist Funds of Latin America and the Caribbean: Amplifying collective voice and power to advance gender justice amid regional crises

Eight women’s and feminist funds in Latin America and the Caribbean, are working together to mobilize resources and amplify the collective power of women, feminists, LGBTQI+ organizations, and movements in the region.

“We are used to repeating that Latin America and the Caribbean is the most unequal region in the world and now we are going to get used to saying that we are also the region with the most powerful and mobilizing feminism on the planet.” – Declaration of the Forum of Feminist Organizations Fabiola Campillai, XIV Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean

Inspiration

Latin America and the Caribbean, with its vast cultural, ethnic, social, and linguistic diversity, faces persistent inequalities exacerbated by gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

Democratic backsliding is evidenced by the rise in anti-rights policies, religious fundamentalisms, authoritarian governments, the climate crisis, and economic instability, threatening hard-won gains in women’s and LGBTQI+ rights.

Despite the vital role of feminist movements in transforming the world, funding for women’s and LGBTQI+ organizations remains scarce. Donors often prioritize macroeconomic indicators while overlooking the region’s high violence and inequality.

The Alliance member funds, as political allies, are well-positioned to mobilize resources for grassroots organizations driving transformative change.

Building on over a decade of joint initiatives, campaigns, and projects, the Alliance strengthens movements and incorporates lessons learned, guided by principles of transparency, dialogue, horizontality, and interdependence

The Process

Supported by Fenomenal Funds, the Alliance aims to:

  • Strengthen their collective voice in activist spaces to reposition Latin America as a priority in philanthropy.
  • Deepen the political bond and dialogue with regional feminists and LGBTQI+ movements.
  • Build institutional capacity for member funds with less access to flexible resources through financial support and opportunities.

Key activities include:

  • Collective participation in conferences, meetings, and advocacy spaces
  • Knowledge sharing calls and annual meetings
  • Dialogues with regional social movements
  • Financial support and capacity building for less-resourced member funds
  • Documenting and systematizing the Alliance’s work
Ways of Working
  • Strategic decisions will be made by consensus in regular virtual and annual in-person meetings.
  • The eight funds will share responsibility for execution, accountability, and results.
  • Fundación Apthapi Jopueti – Fondo de Mujeres (Fondo de Mujeres Bolivia Apthapi Jopueti) will coordinate with Fenomenal Funds.
  • Extraordinary meetings will be convened as needed.
What Does Success Look Like?
  • Working collaboratively amidst the diversity of funds in the Alliance to trace a collective path forward.
  • Documenting and systematizing the Alliance’s experience of collective work and articulation to share with the Prospera network and regional social movements.
  • Strengthening the capacity of member funds in fundraising, advocacy and movement building.
  • Amplifying the collective voice and power of the Alliance to influence the mobilization and redistribution of resources in the region.
Between the lines

While the Alliance is united by a shared context and vision, working from a place of difference remains challenging. Principles of quality and closeness guide their collaboration.

Overloaded agendas can limit meeting frequency, and measuring success from a feminist perspective adds complexity. Balancing participation and resource access among members of varying sizes and capacities is a priority. Earmarking funds to enhance communication and fundraising capacities aligns with the Alliance’s values of solidarity and interdependence.

The Alliance aims to mobilize and redistribute resources to frontlines of intersecting crises, driving transformative change in Latin American feminisms.
